Attention instructors and coaches!
.
Just as you prep your body physically to teach or coach (even if this simply means prioritizing your own physical wellness, cardiovascular health, &/or general muscular strength & endurance), you NEED to set yourself up for vocal success in order to have a good class, to create a lasting impact on others, & to inspire and motivate them to do “hard things” they can’t do alone. What does this mean to you?
.
Your VOICE should not be subject to a dice roll. Your VOICE is your audible business card. Your VOICE conveys your important inspirational, motivational, & purposeful message out to your clients, athletes, & students. Why would you take a gamble on vocal health & wellness? Why wouldn’t you want to ENHANCE the dynamic possibilities of your vocal influence to create engaging experiences within the four walls of your studio or gym? Your (vocal) impact on others is up to you. Inspiration and motivation aside, if this only means your ability to CLEARLY instruct the moves of a dance class, Lagree class, boot camp, cycle class, or otherwise—then the importance of this cannot be emphasized enough.
.
Your VOICE can make or break a class.
.
Vocal quality speaks to voice care & vocal use patterns. If you intentionally prioritize strength training or cardio or nutrition (or hopefully all three) so you “look the part” to your clients & serve as an example of physical health to inspire others to also make a daily habit of prioritizing health, but you open your mouth & sound as if you’ve smoked for years or partied too hard last night, then there is an immediate disconnect between your picture of health & “how you sound”. What you EXUDE, they inhale (YES!), BUT wouldn’t you rather that your overall ENERGY be supported by a healthy & vibrant & reliable vocal energy too? It IS possible. :)
.
A 2020 study by Vincent & Emm gathered pilot data on the effects of a typical collegiate athletic season on the male coach’s voice: their study “exposed traces of adverse voice reactions to coaching and confirmed that COACHES HARBOR A JOB-BASED PROCLIVITY TO VOICE OVERUSE” (aka YOU ARE AN OCCUPATIONAL VOICE USER & your job puts you at higher risk for voice-related challenges). In addition, they found that self-reported measures appeared to be the least immune to phonatory exertion that pervades daily coaching tasks (aerodynamic measures were the most immune). The research study we just finished analyzed multiple self-reported measures of a large group of fitness professionals at specific increments within the study…we had some amazing conclusions.

Stay tuned for results, & for continued posts on this exact topic coming soon!!
