Keep Your Sternum Lifted...
.
...When you speak, when you sing, when you coach, when you talk on the phone, when you participate in a zoom meeting... whenever you use your voice. Keep your sternum lifted!
.
.
If your sternum travels inward toward your spine when breathing, talking, singing, or just in general when you’re sitting or standing—this will also cause the shoulders to move downward/inward, the upper back to hunch, the respiratory & resonatory systems to be compromised (with likely use of muscle tension/hyperfunction to overcompensate), and all of these will contribute to reduced support for breathing and voice (among other things).
.
.
*Keeping the sternum lifted:
provides beautiful openness in the respiratory system (think of that free-flowing air through the open garden hose)
supports expansion of the lungs & efficient use of the respiratory system and musculature in general
encourages optimal head/neck alignment & posture for voice use (and breathing)
reduces overcompensatory muscle tension
promotes an open & relaxed vocal tract
encourages abdominal engagement for voice “support”
improves confidence
promotes vocal freedom
.
The next time you feel that your voice has lost “oomph”, or that you struggle with holding a note, and/or that you start to strain with extended or dynamic voice use, try to KEEP YOUR STERNUM LIFTED while using your voice — FEEL and HEAR the difference.
