A new research study (Savareh, et al., 2021) investigated the immediate effects of semi-occluded vocal tract exercises (SOVTEs) as a vocal warm-up in singers specific to their extrinsic laryngeal muscle activity acoustic parameters of voice. Ooooooooh.
.
.
Surface electromyography (of the suprahyoid & infrahyoid muscle regions) and acoustic measurements were assessed before & immediately after performance of three SOVTEs for 20 minutes (these included a LIP TRILL, HUM, and STRAW PHONATION). After the “vocal warm-up”, there were statistically significant (positive) changes in the electromyographic & acoustic measurements (reduction in the electrical activity of the extrinsic laryngeal muscles AND a decrease in fundamental frequency, F1, and F1-F0 variables). The results suggest that the results of “SOVTEs through VOCAL ECONOMY lead to a reduction to the load applied to the phonatory system”. Ooooh that last sentence though (insert 100 emoji...). Vocal economy though (insert praise hands emoji...and 100 emoji...). :)

LOVE this new research… yet ANOTHER study demonstrating the POSITIVE EFFECTS of SOVTEs on the VOICE!!!!

If you’re not using them now, START. If you don’t know how, REACH OUT.
SOVTEs make a world of difference for your voice quality, vocal efficiency, vocal use patterns, AND reduce your vocal fatigue and vocal effort. They easily RESET the voice between your daily vocal tasks (however strenuous), and they easily serve as a warm-up or cool-down. They also PREP your voice to be its BEST at whatever you’re doing—speaking, singing, instructing, projecting, motivating, and/or speaking on the phone (just to name a few ways we use our beautiful vocal instruments every day!)…

PRIORITIZE YOUR VOICE. Do some SOVTEs. Go ahead, start NOW. Two minutes right now make a difference. #letsgo
