Occupational Voice Use

July 9, 2020

.

Occupational voicing percentage per hour is more than twice that of non-occupational voicing (Hunter & Titze, 2010).

.

…and as an occupational voice user, that means you use your voice MORE THAN TWICE the amount per hour than someone who does not use their voice for their JOB…and it also means you are likely at higher risk for dysphonia. But YOU also have the power to decrease that risk despite your high vocal demand by PRIORITIZING your vocal health and prioritizing optimal/efficient use of your voice.

.

.

PRIORITIZE your voice. I keep mentioning the word “prioritize” because YOU are in control of your priorities—you CHOOSE what you prioritize. As an occupational voice user, you should choose to rank your voice high up on the priority list. Commit to vocal health and wellness. Ensure you are using your voice efficiently in all settings and amongst all communication partners. Perform vocal warm-ups and cool-downs. Remember that you make your living by using those two little vocal folds in your voicebox to create sound, and you must take care of them. Understand the truth that EVERY time you open your mouth to speak is an OPPORTUNITY to use your best voice…and take ownership of your POWER to rebalance, heal, retrain, protect, and efficiently use your voice.

.

Do the job you are passionate about (teach, sing, instruct, coach, inspire, motivate, broadcast, advise, entertain, etc.)—YOUR VOICE is your instrument for that MISSION—but make sure your job does not destroy your voice. Prioritize your voice by learning all that you can about vocal health, voice use habits, and overall optimal vocal delivery so that you can be confident it will be there for you whenever you need it to create a lasting impact on others as you pursue and fulfill your occupational mission.

.

.
