December 21, 2020

.

I was honored to be interviewed by Tor Spence (@voicefituk on instagram)  and featured on her voice Chit Chats this week! She happens to be my voice sister from across the pond🇬🇧 and I’m happy we’ve gotten to share our passion for voice because of social media. See Tor's post below (or on instagram/facebook) and also check out our interview further below (in writing) or by viewing the photos. I’m powered by passion and I hope you can hear that when you read it.

Repost from @voicefituk

Ive been SO excited about interviewing Sara Davis @voxfit_ this week. What an inspiration! Sara is a voice specialist speech pathologist and fitness coach in the US. I feel privileged to have met her on Instagram. She has achieved a dream to research and present. She has passion for her work and for fitness and music. We share a love for the scope!! 😂

She works for her patients, to inspire and motivate and has a strong drive to protect fitness professionals from occupational voice disorders.

I think she is an inspiration and I can’t wait to meet her in person one day. Something amazing to come out of 2020 for me has been meeting Sara and others on Instagram making connections and sharing work passion with others across the globe.

Hope you love reading this interview. Thank you so much Sara xx

Interview in writing:

1) What’s it been like as an SLP in 2020—For me, it’s been mostly the same (super grateful that I haven’t stopped working!), but with an emphasis on flexibility, adaptability, and a focus of even more love provided within patient care. Being flexible was important especially related to the opportunity I had to help in acute care with (+) patients when/as needed and also related to schedule changes and adjustments. Being open to change and adaptations was especially important because so much went virtual this year (some patient care, continuing education/conferences, and even phone calls to friends and family) and we also had to adapt to wearing constant PPE while providing diagnostics and therapy (unless virtual). With all that was “different” about 2020, I truly felt a strong desire to provide the patients that I treated with even more love and intentional kindness than normal, knowing that for some people it was the only interaction with others that they were able to have.

 .

2) I became a speech pathologist because of a STRONG passion within my heart to HELP others, and especially help them with those incredibly important aspects of life we so often easily take for granted—breathing, speaking/voicing, and swallowing. I knew what I wanted to do since my junior year in high school and never looked back; every year I became more obsessed with the field and strived to become more specialized within it.

 .

3) My favorite thing about being a speech pathologist is probably doing anything that involves a rigid or flexible scope (ha ha ha)… and teaching the patient about their anatomy and function. I truly believe in the power of education and love to take the time with patients to provide this (especially via biofeedback). I love all voice and swallowing-related diagnostics although also enjoy providing therapy (and love manual therapy as well as guiding the patient to self-empowerment via negative practice and overall improved kinesthetic awareness). I love continuing to learn via research, conferences, and collaboration with colleagues (as well as from patients!). In general though, my favorite thing about being a speech pathologist is patient care and being able to make a difference in the lives of others.

 .

4) When I’m not being a speechie, I love to teach (and take) fitness classes!!!! I am an active person and truly believe movement and music are medicine. I have another huge passion and it’s for FITNESS! I have been teaching some form of fitness for over 13 years now ranging from indoor cycling to barre to Lagree fitness (megaformer classes). My passions for both the medical (voice) world and the fitness world (along with research) led me to create my small business @voxfit_. My mission and passion is to educate, inspire, rehabilitate, and coach occupational voice users—especially fitness professionals.

 .

5) A recent career highlight was getting my research published and also presenting it at The Fall Voice conference. A goal of mine has always been to present and to do research and I really enjoyed having the opportunity to do both (for which I am so grateful). I also enjoyed the journey to achieving both of these goals—faith, hard work, a strong work ethic, persistence, lots of passion, and the courage in pursuing big dreams are what guide me.

6) I can’t wait to continue to do more research, attend in-person conferences again, and of course for my next beach trip (can’t stay away too long—ha ha)! Also can’t wait to meet Tor in person, maybe at St. Blaise church in the UK?! Hehe :)
